What Does Dad Teach in Your School

Driver's education begins at an early age in our school.   It is not an elective.   If you ride in a car and can hear, you are enrolled!     If you can speak and answer questions all the better, but it is not a requirement for the lesson begins with questions, but don't worry answers will be provided if not produced immediately.   Which way is the best way to turn out of the drive way?   At which angle are you most visible to any incoming traffic?    Which signs are suggestions and which signs are absolutes?    In which situations are headlights required?

Driver's education is a class taught by Dad at our house. Curriculum isn't used nor is a book list required.    It is simply information Dad feels  his duty to share with his children.   Information he feels he needs  to share so they will be safe as well as grow up to be responsible citizens.

Other classes he feels his duty to share:

Beginning Plumbing

Bathroom Humor 101
(you know they kinda go together!)

Ethics

Ironing
(One important thing he took away from those six years in the military)

Proper dishwashing techniques

Home repair

Music History 1975-2005

Fitness 101---999

 Sportsmanship.

  1. We had an impromptu drivers ed lesson yesterday. We passed a neighbor who had been involved in a tragic accident, with a teen driver, who crossed head on into his lane. The investigation proved our poor neighbor did everything he could to stop. There were HUGE skid marks from him standing on the brakes.

We then passed the memorial for the teen who died in the accident.
We talked about how much his family must miss him...over one moment of inattentiveness.

A healthy fear of being in control of a 2 ton weapon is a natural part of drivers ed, at least in my book...

  3. Love this list! LOL My hubby is the history buff and the guitar player and the passing-along-wisdom-from-the Godfather movie guy! He also is a chef so he will be doing a good share of "home economics"! :)

  4. I love this!

Often there's so much pressure to have Dad "teach" something formallly in a homeschool! And so few dads want to go this route; they have more important things to pass on to their kids than mere subjects.

Including how to loosen up a bit. :)

    Great post!
